LATE SUMMER AND THE EARTH ELEMENT
Gather, Harvest and Store!
A Reflection for the Season of the Earth Element – Late Summer
Late Summer invites us to ground, gather, and attune to the wisdom of the Earth element. This reflection offers insight into the energetic qualities of this transitional season, and how we can harmonize body, mind, and spirit through the lens of Traditional Chinese Medicine and attuning to nature’s cycles
As the long days of summer slowly begin to wind down, we enter a transitional “fifth season” that spans the end of summer into autumn. This is the Late Summer, when the Earth’s energy is most dominant. After the zenith of the Fire element at the peak of summer, the intense brightness and heat begin to yield to a gentler, more yin phase.
During this season of generosity, nature offers her ripest fruits. Gardens brim with bounty, the air is fragrant with abundance, and the Earth radiates color and nourishment.
Since we are a part of nature—and nature a part of us—it is wise to follow Mother Nature’s guidance during this season, inwardly and outwardly.
What is ready to be gathered or shared?
What needs digesting, integrating, or letting go?
When we turn our hearts in gratitude toward all we’ve been given, the natural impulse is not to hoard, but to share the bounty — and also to begin preparing for the cooler months ahead.
Returning to Center
While the sun still warms our bodies, hearts, and Shen(spirit), Late Summer invites us to linger in warmth a little longer before we begin the inward gathering that sustains us through autumn and winter. Life’s energy, like the sap in trees, begins to draw inward, storing vitality at the root.
This is the perfect time to attune to your center — physically, energetically, emotionally — and reflect on what will sustain you in the coming months.
The Earth Element and the Spleen–Stomach Energies
In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), the Earth element governs the digestive and energetic systems of the Spleen and Stomach. But this isn’t just about food. Earth represents our ability to digest all that life offers — impressions, thoughts, experiences, and emotions.
When Earth is balanced, we feel nourished, grounded, and clear-minded. When out of balance, we may struggle with fatigue, worry, poor digestion, or difficulty integrating what we take in.
Ask yourself:
– What am I taking in — physically, emotionally, spiritually?
– Can I digest it?
– What nourishes me — and what depletes me?
This is a time to care for ourselves by adjusting diet, lifestyle, breath, and mental focus to support the Earth within us.
Yi: The Spirit of Earth
Each organ system in Chinese Medicine is also linked to a spirit aspect. For the Spleen, this is the Yi, often translated as intellect, but more accurately understood as our capacity for reflection, focus, and possibility thinking.
When the Yi is strong and centered, we can think clearly, reflect wisely, and approach life with compassion and curiosity. When it is weak or scattered, we may fall into worry, overthinking, or negative loops, which further deplete our energy.
Meditation, breath practices, and grounding ritualshelp calm and nourish the Yi, restore harmony, and center the mind in the body.
Seasonal Wellness as a Spiritual Path
Like nature, our health and inner landscape shift with the seasons. Rather than resisting these changes, we can welcome them as invitations to deeper harmony.
Late Summer is the time to:
– Fortify your center
– Support the Spleen and Stomach Qi
– Store the vitality that will carry you into autumn
– Cultivate clarity, nourishment, and calm
By strengthening the Earth element now, we prepare for greater resilience when autumn brings its own challenges to the lungs, immunity, and emotional balance.
“Knowing how to treat the center is knowing how to bring all networks into balance.”
