SEASONS OF THE BREATH:

SPRING - TIME FOR A FRESH START!

As the days grow longer and light returns, all of nature begins to stir from her winter hibernation. The cheerful sounds of birdsong reappear in our gardens, crocuses and snowdrops brighten the parks, and the sweet fragrance of hyacinths and daffodils drifts through the morning air.

Spring quietly unfolds around us. The yin stillness of winter gives way to movement, to life awakening again—inviting us, too, into a fresh beginning.

The energy of spring is one of rising and expansion. From deep within the roots, life force pushes upward, nourishing branches, leaves, and blossoms. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, this movement is associated with the Wood element—a dynamic force of growth, vision, and renewal.

After the dormancy of winter, spring brings a surge of vitality: a time of upward movement, rapid growth, and the quiet power that breaks through what has been held in stillness.

Like nature, we are part of this cycle. Spring invites us into renewal—physically, emotionally, and spiritually. It is a season to open to change, to reconnect with our inner direction, and to allow new possibilities to emerge.

The Wood Element – Vision and Direction

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, the Wood element is linked to the liver and gall bladder. Yet these organs represent far more than physical functions. They are part of an energetic system that includes our emotions, our mental clarity, and our capacity for inner alignment.

The liver is known as the Official of Strategic Planning—the aspect within us that envisions our path forward. When this energy flows freely, we can see clearly, sense what needs to be released, and align our actions with our deeper nature.

The gall bladder, its companion, is the Official of Decision Making. It supports our ability to act with clarity, to choose wisely, and to move forward with confidence.

When these energies are balanced, we feel inspired, focused, and able to follow a direction that feels true. But when the Wood element is out of balance, we may feel stuck, frustrated, or overwhelmed. Irritability, tension, and inner pressure can arise, affecting both our inner life and our relationships.

Balance and Imbalance

In nature, Wood is both strong and flexible. Bamboo offers a beautiful image: rooted, resilient, yet able to bend with the wind.

In the same way, a healthy Wood element allows us to remain steady while adapting to change. We can move with life, rather than resist it.

When imbalance arises, we may notice tendencies toward impatience, judgment, indecision, or emotional tension. Physically, this can manifest as tightness in the body, headaches, digestive disturbances, or stress-related conditions.

These are gentle signals inviting us to restore flow and balance.

Moving with Change

The liver system is responsible for the smooth flow of qi, blood, and emotions. Movement is therefore essential—especially in our modern lives, where stagnation can easily arise.

Walking in nature, surrounded by the living green of spring, can already bring nourishment and ease. The color green itself has a harmonizing effect on the Wood element, helping to soften tension and restore balance.

Practices such as qigong offer deeper support. Through both dynamic movement and gentle, mindful exercises, we can release stagnation, restore flexibility, and reconnect body, breath, and awareness.

An Invitation

The Seasons of the Breath classes offer a space to attune to this living rhythm of spring. Through breathwork, qigong, and meditation, we support the natural movement of renewal within us—awakening clarity, direction, and the courage to move forward in harmony with life.
