Autumn Reflections

The Art of Letting Go

Autumn is nature’s quiet invitation to let go.

After the fullness of summer, the earth begins to release what has completed its purpose. Trees surrender their leaves in a final blaze of colour before returning to stillness. The light softens, the days grow shorter, and life gently turns inward.

We are part of this same living rhythm. Autumn reminds us that letting go is not a loss but an act of trust. As the trees release their leaves to nourish the earth, we too are invited to release what has become worn, heavy, or no longer life-giving. In doing so, we create space for something quieter and more essential to emerge.

The Wisdom of Autumn

In Traditional East Asian Medicine, autumn is associated with the Metal element and with the paired organs of the Lung and the Colon. Together they express one of life’s most fundamental rhythms: receiving what is nourishing and releasing what no longer serves.

Every breath embodies this wisdom. We inhale what gives life, and we exhale what has completed its work. In the same way, our hearts flourish when we learn to receive beauty, gratitude, and inspiration, while gently releasing old stories, unnecessary burdens, and whatever has become stale within us.

Autumn is also the season traditionally associated with grief—not as something to overcome, but as love learning to live with change. When grief is welcomed with compassion, it softens the heart and gradually makes room for gratitude, tenderness, and new life.

The Metal element also reminds us of our intrinsic worth. Like precious metal refined within the earth, our deepest value is not something we achieve. It is something we remember.

A Season of Reflection

Perhaps this season is inviting you to pause and ask:

  • What am I ready to release?
  • What no longer nourishes my life?
  • What truly matters now?
  • What is quietly waiting to emerge beneath all that has fallen away?

May this autumn become a season of gentle surrender.

May every breath help you release what is no longer needed.

May every breath remind you that beneath all the changing seasons of life, your deepest nature remains whole, resilient, and quietly alive.

Continue the Journey

If these reflections resonate with you, you are warmly invited to continue the journey through this year’s Autumn – Seasons of the Breath programme.

Together we explore the wisdom of autumn through qigong, contemplative practice, guided reflection, and the healing insights of Traditional East Asian Medicine. Rather than simply learning about the season, we gradually learn to live its wisdom—discovering practices that cultivate resilience, balance, and a deeper harmony with the rhythms of the natural world.
